PHD HUMANITIES:
HISTORY, PHILOSOPHY AND AESTHETICS
INTRODUCTION
The programme aims to study the Humanities as an approach to the roots, the soul and the key to understanding Western Civilisation in three areas: History and Society, Philosophy (especially in the fields of Anthropology and Education) and Aesthetics.
History is studied as a field of accomplishments and conflict among the values of Unity, Goodness, Truth and Beauty in Society. Anthropology is approached as an investigation into human image, our place in existence and implication in education. Finally, Aesthetics is studied as a synthesis of Imagination, Truth and Reason, and as an expression of the feelings of awe elicited by art, literature, ideas and religion.
The programme is developed within the framework of an academic community that understands research and education in the humanities not as rationalistic speculation, or as titanic exercise of the will or aesthetic diversion, but as a scholarly journey in which understanding, freedom and the heart are harmonised and mutually involved. Thus, the research carried out in the fields of Literature, History and Art, Philosophy and Religion is sustained by a love for Truth, Goodness and Beauty, and by intellectual and vital concerns that question the nature, meaning and value of things. This research seeks to discover the link between different realities of human existence, is capable of creatively connecting theory with praxis, and is open to dialogue and encounters with others in order to discover and demonstrate to what extent “Man is the measure of all things”, and what this means.
The research areas offered by Francisco de Vitoria University are:
- History and Society
- Anthropology and Education
- Aesthetics: Imagination-Truth-Reason
