UFV SUSTAINABLE
Take care of our common home
UFV SUSTAINABLE
At UFV we are committed to a comprehensive education that includes values such as social and individual responsibility, ethics and truth, justice, equality and respect for all. In addition, skills and competencies for the care of our common home, the planet on which we live, are also explored in order to understand the new problems that arise: the challenge of climate change, pollution or loss of biodiversity, in line with the proposal of integral ecology of the Encyclical Laudato Si of Pope Francis.
In this academic year, we have continued to deploy sustainability as a strategic focus of UFV’s mission and of all actions carried out on and off campus. We want to be a university whose mission and culture integrates sustainability from the vision of the human being in relation to all creation (common home), that understands the impact that the serious deterioration of the earth will have on humanity, and that takes action accordingly in the different areas of action of the university, such as: teaching, research, its own internal management, transfer of results and service to society.
To this end, the UFV Strategic Sustainability Plan has been designed taking into account a three-pronged approach (social, economic and environmental). As additional references we have the Encyclical Laudato Si, the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), both of which were published in 2015, and all the legislative action of the European Green Deal (EGD), which is being progressively transposed into Spanish positive law and which will affect the labor activity of our graduates, and the UFV must train and prepare them for this.
We invite you to consult our third Sustainability Report of the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria (UFV), corresponding to the academic year 2020-2021, where we give an account of the firm commitment acquired to work in favor of the care of our common home.
Finally, I would like to personally thank all those who make up this great UFV family for their effort, concern and sensitivity shown towards our proposal to contribute to making this world a better place for future generations.

IPCC
On the 19th of this month, the synthesis report of the sixth assessment report on the state of the climate of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), which is reviewed every six years was published.
This report brings together recent research from scientific groups around the world on the evolution of the climate, and integrates the results of the contributions of the 3 IPCC working groups published in 2021 and 2022 on the scientific basis, impacts, adaptation and vulnerability and mitigation of climate change.
The report states:
“Human activities, primarily through greenhouse gas emissions, have unequivocally caused global warming, with global surface temperature reaching 1.1 °C higher in 2011-2020 than the average temperature of 1850-1900. Widespread and rapid changes have occurred in the atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere and biosphere.”
“Human-caused climate change is already affecting many extreme weather and climate events in all regions of the world. This has resulted in widespread adverse impacts and related loss and damage to nature and people.”
“Climate change is a threat to human well-being and the health of the planet. There is a rapidly closing window of opportunity to ensure a livable and sustainable future for all. Climate resilient development integrates adaptation and mitigation to advance sustainable development for all”
The structure of the report is as follows:
A.- Current status and trends
Observed warming and its causes
Observed changes and impacts
Current progress in adaptation and gaps and challenges
Current progress, gaps and challenges in mitigation
B.- Future climate change, risks and long-term responses
Future climate change
Likelihood and risks of unavoidable, irreversible or abrupt changes
Adaptation options and their limits in a warmer world
Carbon Budgets and Zero Net Emission
Mitigation pathways
Overshoot: exceeding a warming level and returning to it
C.- Near-term responses
Urgency of near-term integrated climate action
The benefits of near-term action
Cross-system mitigation and adaptation options
Synergies and trade-offs with sustainable developmen
Equity and Inclusion
Governance and Policys

ACTIONS TO RAISE AWARENESS
ACTIONS TO RAISE AWARENESS
APRIL 27
On April 27, 2024, a visit was made to Mijares to see the result of the reforestation campaign in which UFV participates. This year, more than 5,000 trees have been planted, as part of the strategy to achieve carbon neutrality.
During the event, a forestry engineer from Bosques Sostenibles (Sustainable Forests) explained the reforestation processes and their impact on biodiversity and the recovery of more than 10,000ha devastated by a fire in 2013.
Students and teachers were able to observe the progress of the planted trees and learn about the challenges of managing forests in a sustainable way.
— A MORE SUSTAINABLE PLANET IS POSSIBLE THANKS TO YOU
FEBRUARY-APRIL
During the months of February, March and April of 2024 the UFV launched the app SéSostenible. Integrated in the UFVapp, this application seeks to create sustainable habits among students and make them aware of the importance of their daily actions in caring for our common home. More than 200 students have participated in the challenges, winningprizes.
— Natura
From 10-24 OCTOBER
The natura group is a sustainable community that welcomes students with concerns about the care of the common home.
In this group topics such as integral ecology, the importance of the commitment with the common home and the reforestation project of the UFV are explored in depth
The natura group held 6 sessions: 3 practical and 3 theoretical; with the practical sessions based on dissemination of information for reforestation organized by the UFV and the theoretical sessions on the fundamental concepts for the care of the common home.
CARBON FOOTPRINT REDUCTION
REDUCING THE CARBON FOOTPRINT
APRIL 12
Since 2019, the UFV has registered its Carbon Footprint in the Official carbon footprint register of the Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITECO) (MITECO). This registration, of a voluntary nature, accredits that the university has calculated its Carbon Footprint and that it will take measures and set targets to reduce it.
On April 12, 2024, MITECO updated the latest data corresponding to 2022 emissions.
The data reflected in this Register makes us very optimistic and we see the goal that the UFV has set itself of achieving carbon neutrality by 2029 as being closer than expected.
Of the 13 universities that have registered their carbon footprint in 2022, the UFV is the one with the lowest Total Relative Footprint (0.025 tCO2eq/no. students and employees) and the third in Total Footprint (442 tCo2eq)
Likewise, the UFV has been awarded the CALCULATE AND REDUCE seal by MITECO, which certifies that in addition to calculating the HC, the UFV has implemented effective reduction commitments, reducing the average ratio of the last 3 years.
SUSTAINABLE FORESTS
As part of the strategy to achieve carbon neutrality, UFV carries out, among others, offsetting actions through reforestation campaigns. In the last campaign, more than 5,000 trees were planted.
Planting a tree for each new enrollment. This is the initiative that the UFV is implementing this year to involve our students in caring for our common home. A symbolic action that is part of our commitment to sustainability and environmental education of students. These new trees have been planted in a special protection area for birds in the Tiétar Valley, contributing to reforestation, CO2 absorption and biodiversity care. This action expands the agreement signed with Sustainable Forests in 2021 to strengthen biodiversity and combat climate change.
AGREEMENTS
AGREEMENTS
Madrileña Red de Gas, leader in the distribution of gas in the Madrid region, and theFrancisco de Vitoria University (UFV)have signed a collaboration agreement to develop green hydrogen technology, from research to implementation and development.
The alliance is part of the strategic sustainability plan that both signatories are carrying out.
Likewise, this agreement includes collaboration in training and academic dissemination on hydrogen and its uses, providing a complement in the training of future professionals within the technical educational branches taught by the university.
2ND MOBILITY SURVEY
HELP US TAKE CARE OF OUR COMMON HOME
FEBRUARY
In February 2024 the Sustainability Department launched the 2nd Mobility Survey. A very representative sample of the entire UFV community was obtained, which allows us to know the mobility habits of students, faculty and staff. It will also help us to calculate the carbon footprint of our organization in Scope 3 and to make proposals for improving efficient and sustainable mobility.
