RESEARCH SUMMARY
Biological chemistry combines the approaches of chemistry, biology and related disciplines to understand and manipulate biological systems with molecular precision. Through the application of chemical, analytical and nanotechnological techniques, as well as compounds produced by chemical synthesis, biological systems are studied and modulated to investigate the underlying biology or create new functions.
Brain function can be studied and manipulated by controlling brain chemistry. Neurons possess receptors that are sensitive to specific neurotransmitters, such as glutamate, which is the major neurotransmitter in the brain and is involved in important brain functions. Mismatches in glutamate levels have been associated with important neurological disorders. From a chemical and pharmacological approach we aim to develop and validate new contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging to visualize glutamatergic and other neurotransmitter function in vivo.
The research carried out in our group is highly multidisciplinary, and focuses on the development of new chemical and nanotechnological technologies for molecular and functional imaging. Our goal is to develop new tools for functional magnetic resonance imaging associated with specific molecular processes occurring in the brain.
