On this occasion, we participated in Service-Learning Projects of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, directed by Prof. Dr. Jorge Gallego Sánchez-Torija. The second project, in the San Cristobal Market, is currently in progress. The first project took place in 2022 in Mercado de la Paz, and is presented below.
In the study of the use of energy in buildings, which is undertaken throughout different subjects in the Degree in Fundamentals of Architecture, special emphasis is placed on passive aspects of design (form factor, orientation and proportion of openings, solar gain and protection, etc.), on the configuration of the thermal envelope (thermal insulation, thermal inertia, solar factor, etc.) and on the energy efficiency of the installations
Likewise, throughout their training in the Undergraduate Degree in Business Administration and Management (ADE), students carry out business plans, business analyses, econometric studies, audits, etc. Theoretical knowledge is acquired to prepare these documents, although it is more difficult for students to gain experience in implementing the measures they propose.
This service-learning project aims to include people as a fundamental part of the process of energy use in buildings to make their business more viable. This approach complements and builds on the technical training received by the students, complementing the theoretical aspects with eminently practical issues. The starting point is the analysis of energy and water use in buildings (in this case, the La Paz market in Madrid), in order to apply the knowledge acquired by the students. Teachers and researchers support a student from the UPM Architecture Degree and a student from the UFV Business Administration Degree to set up an energy team together with the management of the La Paz market in Madrid, the head of maintenance and the president of the traders’ association
After the presentation of the Guide to Sustainability for Municipal Markets in December 2022, conversations began with the cities of Panama, Mexico and Guatemala for the development of an academic consultancy on circular management in their food markets supported by the Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities (UCCI) which resulted, with funding from the Vice-Rectorate of the University and the City Council, in two visits to Panama in August 2023 and to Mexico City in November of the same year, from which the following conclusions are derived (note: only summaries are provided). For information on the full reports, please contact the Chair by email)
