INTERMUNICIPAL TOURNAMENT

OF SCHOOL DEBATE

12 to 14 April 2024

TRAINING

Aware of the importance of debate as a pedagogical tool to develop the comprehension, analytical and synthesis skills of our young people, as well as the resources offered by dialectics and oratory to know how to argue, convince and defend different points of view, the Francisco de Vitoria University has developed a comprehensive training plan.

TRAINING FOR TEACHERS AND CAPTAINS

We understand that this activity would not be possible without the support of a teacher to support and guide the students, therefore, a training course will be given at the Francisco de Vitoria University to all the trainers of this activity.
The aim of this day, which will be divided into basic and advanced levels, is to explain the importance of the debate as a pedagogical tool, to see its types, formats and variants, as well as to introduce us to the appropriate tools to use in the study and documentation phase. Throughout the afternoon we will deal with essential issues for the management of verbal and non-verbal communication such as the mastery of space, audience analysis, body control, gaze and gestures.
This course, in addition to being open to the teachers who will act as captains of the registered teams, is also offered to all teachers from the schools that will participate.

TRAINING FOR STUDENTS

The protagonists of the activity will have a complete training and assistance that will allow them to learn and get the best out of themselves to face this challenge with enthusiasm. In this sense, several activities will be developed to complement and help the teachers in their work as captains. Once the teacher has detailed the dynamics of the activity, different types of training will be carried out:

1. EXHIBITION DEBATE

All the students of the participating schools will be invited to the first theoretical/practical debate training, which will be held at the Francisco de Vitoria University where they will be able to be spectators of a university debate that will have the same debate format that the young students will have to perform later.

The program of this activity will be divided into:

  • A theoretical introduction to the debate format that they will witness.
  • Visualization of the different debates of the tournament that will be of great help for the students to take references and learn what to do and what not to do.
  • Feed-back between the secondary and high school students, the university debaters and the organizers where they will be able to contribute and exchange impressions, doubts and suggestions of the students, in order to improve the understanding of the development of the debate

2. FACE-TO-FACE DISCUSSION TRAININGS

in-person training sessions will be held in the collaborating municipalities of Madrid, Las Rozas and Pozuelo de Alarcón. All registered centers will be able to attend with their teams to analyze, practice and resolve any doubts related to the competition.

■ If any center from the municipality where the training is being given cannot attend the meeting on that day, they can choose any of the available options by sending an email to torneoescolar.debates@ufv.es.

■ The training sessions will be given during the academic day from 09.30am-2pm, with a break. The aim of the training is to help the student and the center to make a good analysis of the question, to explain the phases of preparation, ways and methods of investigation, as well as to reinforce and clarify the parts of the debate and the rules of the debate.
