INSURANCE INFORMATION
MOBILITY
One of the obligations of all UFV students participating in international mobility programs (Erasmus or bilateral) managed by the Vice-Rector’s Office for Internationalization is to take out health care, travel assistance and repatriation insurance in case of accident with the minimum coverage determined by the Vice-Rector’s Office. In addition, the UFV may require the contracting of civil liability insurance for certain types of mobility. Any of the three types of insurance mentioned above must cover the entire period of stay at the host university.
Erasmus+ mobility students:
Since the 2012/2013 academic year, the Autonomous Body for European Educational Programs (OAPEE, now SEPIE) has made it mandatory for students to have, in addition to the health care covered by the European Health Insurance Card, travel assistance and repatriation insurance during their Erasmus stay and to send a copy of the contracted insurance to the International Relations Office of the UFV before the beginning of the student’s mobility period
European Health Insurance Card
For Erasmus+ stays you must apply for the European Health Insurance Card which allows access to public health care in any of the 27 EU countries, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. More information about the European Health Insurance Card on the Social Security website and on the European Commission website .
The European Health Insurance Card is not an alternative to travel insurance. It does not cover private health care, nor does it cover costs incurred in certain circumstances such as repatriation, certain surgical interventions, return flight to the country of origin or loss or theft of your belongings. Therefore, students must take out a complementary insurance policy (see information on “private health insurance”).
The complementary insurance policies cover cases such as hospitalization in case of accident including medical transfer to Spain or travel and accommodation of family members to the country of destination, etc
Students completeing a residency period which is NOT Erasmus/Bilateral:
In many non-European universities, exchange students are required to purchase health insurance offered by the host university. However, universities in some countries are more flexible and allow the student to purchase any health care insurance with sufficient international coverage in the destination country and send a copy of the contracted insurance to the UFV International Relations Office before the beginning of the student’s mobility period. The European Health Insurance Card is not valid for this type of mobility.
Private Health Insurance
If the student already has a private family health insurance (Sanitas, Asisa, Adeslas, Mapfre, etc…), he/she should check if it will cover him/her and will be in force during the whole period of stay in the country of destination. It is mandatory to send a copy of the contracted insurance to the International Relations Office before the beginning of the student’s mobility period. Students enrolled in Spanish universities normally take out medical, accident and travel assistance insurance that also covers repatriation of remains. The policy should include:
- Accident insurance abroad.
- Travel assistance insurance for your academic trips.
- Medical insurance if you are outside your country.
- Repatriation in case of an accident.
