Francisco de Vitoria University Hosts Reflection on Forgiveness and Justice in Venezuela
On Wednesday, 26 February, Francisco de Vitoria University hosted a powerful reflection on forgiveness and justice in Venezuela, featuring political scientist and human rights activist Mariana Suárez Ulloa as the keynote speaker.
Titled “Is There Forgiveness Without Justice?”, the event—organised by the Forgiveness Institute and the Virtue and Values Education Centre (VEC)—brought students together to engage with a real-life testimony of those who have endured repression in Venezuela. The discussion included an analysis of scenes from the film SIMÓN, which vividly portrays the brutality of political persecution in the country and the lasting scars it leaves on its victims.
Mariana, who has been imprisoned three times and subjected to physical and psychological torture, shared her personal journey of struggle and resilience. Her courage, generosity, and perseverance have made her a leading voice in the defence of human rights. Her unwavering commitment to justice reflects not only her character but also her profound dedication to her country. Her tireless advocacy has been instrumental in exposing the abuses of the Venezuelan regime. As she powerfully stated, “The war for my country is not over; we have only lost one battle.”
The event fostered deep reflection on the complex relationship between forgiveness and justice, as well as the challenges of rebuilding a nation marked by violence and impunity.Attendees left deeply moved, gaining new perspectives on the human rights struggle in Venezuela. The discussion reaffirmed the importance of honouring the memory of those who have lost their lives in the fight for freedom.
Thank you, Mariana, for reminding us that justice is the foundation of true reconciliation!
